NATIONAL LUTHERAN SCHOOLS WEEK. ***************************************** *Snow makeup days: March 11 and March 12 will be full days of school. No Friday morning Pre-K session on March 12. March 31 will be a full day of school – Pre-K sessions will be held on that day also (previously there was no school on that day). There will be no school on April 1 (Parent/Teacher Conferences day) and on April 2 & 5. **************************************** *Our Kindergarten & Pre-Kindergarten teachers & aides will be attending an Early Childhood Conference at Concordia University in St. Paul, MN on Friday and Saturday this week. ******************************************** March 9th- students in Grade 1-8 will be participating in a “Kids Against Hunger” project to aid the needy children in Haiti. We will be participating with the Lutheran schools from Northrop & Truman at Martin Luther High School. We will be leaving by bus at 8:30 AM and return around 10:45 AM. Students will be assembling, packaging, and boxing meals that will be shipped to Haiti. Our school raised $1,966.25 ( 23 cents covers the cost of one meal so we paid for 8,548 meals!). Kindergarten collected the most money followed closely by the 3rd grade (each collected over $250)! .*************************************** On Friday, March 12, we will be having a Speed Stacking contest in the gymnasium at 1:30. Each classroom has already conducted contests to determine the top 2 students in their rooms. There are 3 levels of difficulty. K-2 do the 3-3-3- stack, Gr. 3-4 do the 3-6-3 stack, and grades 5-8 do the Cycle stack. The contests will determine the fastest speed stacker in each of the 3 levels. The top 2 students in each classroom are: Kindergarten- Gwen & Cadence; First Grade- Sara & Luke; Second Grade- Isaiah & Joseph; Third Grade- Nathan & Nick; Fourth Grade- Lindsey & Anna; Fifth Grade- Sasha & Dylan; Sixth Grde- Travis & Joseph; Seventh Grade- Evan & Rachael; Eighth Grade-Tadd & Briana. Parents are invited to attend. **************************************** A “National Lutheran Schools Week” section was in the Sentinel newspaper today. March 22 from 5:30-6:00. Call us if none of these times work out. ******************************************** SAVE THE DATE! 6th Annual St. Paul Lutheran School Pie & Ice Cream Social and Basket Silent Auction Sunday, April 11- starting at 2:00 PM Start thinking of basket ideas and mark your calendars for this upcoming afternoon of food, fellowship, and fundraising. Sign up sheets will be available in the school corridor soon. If you have any questions, call Sue Sanders (238-1982) or Stephanie Langhofer (235-5872). We have purchased 2 drinking fountains, 2 TV and DVD stations, a classroom audio system, new desks for grades 1-8, and the new reading curriculum for grades 1-3 with money raised by this fundraiser! Approximately $25, 000 has been raised over the last 5 years! ****************************************** Faculty Lenten Supper on March 10 (5:00-6:30)- Menu: Sloppy Joe Sandwiches, Potato Chips, Assorted Salads, Ice Cream, Coffee, Milk, Water. Freewill donation. Profits will be used toward costs involved in attendance at Lutheran Education Conferences. ****************************************** ALUMNI NEWS (A new feature that we will be adding to the School Newsletter (as items are submitted) is a section on “Alumni News.” We will provide information about alumni (Grade 9 and above) who have a notable achievement/information to share. Items are to be submitted in writing or emailed to the School Principal. [splfm2@hotmail.com] ) Becky Breitbarth graduated from our 8th grade in May of 2001, then MLHS and Bethany College, Mankato, MN. She has excelled in the communications and political arena serving as an intern with FOX News in New York City and presently serving as the staff assistant for Congress-woman Michelle Bachmann at the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC. ****************************************** We thank Janice Borcherdt for a gift of $600 for the Accelerated Reading Program! (Janice is our volunteer head school librarian.) We have received $25 in memory of Susan Berggren/Christensen from Perlon & Ruth Engelby. We have received the following in memory of Esther Glienke: $10 from Merle & Bev Brinkman and $10 from Randy & Lori Chirpich. We have received $10 in memory of Sue Chrstensen from Lorraine Thomas. We have received $10 in memory of Arline Roelfsema from Jason & Holly Hegdal. ***************************************** KIDS Stamp Program News: For the school year (2009-20), there are 55 of 118 students who are saving money by buying either 25 cent or $1 stamps on Tuesday or Thursday each week. Of that number, 9 students have filled 13 books for a total of $325. As of March 2, the students have saved a total of $514. Second Grade has 100% participation. The Fourth Grde participation is 12 out of 23 students. In comparison, the total saved in 2009 for the same amount of time was $665.75, with students filing 20 books for a total of $500. This money is then sent in to the Lutheran Church Extension Fund in postage paid envelopes to start a Saving Account for the student and can continue to be added to in $25 increments. If you have any questions, please contact Janice Goebel at 238-2242. **************************************** Benefit lunch (Lasagna) will be held at Martin Luther High School on Sunday, March 14 from 11:00-1:00 for Alex Anderson (who was seriously injured in a car accident on January 14th). The benefit will be a free-will offering. We are looking for individual families or groups of families to donate items for a silent auction at the benefit. Your items can be brought to the school office through March 10th. Please contact Joan Abel (235-3418) or Pat Hall (235-6972) if you would like to help with this silent auction project. (Alex was an 8th grade here last school year and has a sister in our Kindergarten). ****************************************** If you need an enrollment packet for our 3 or 4 year old Pre-Kindergarten or our Kindergarten classes for next school year or know someone who would like one, contact the school office to request a packet ****************************************** Basketball players: B girls and A boys should clean and turn in their basketball uniforms to the school office during the week of March 8-12. Be sure that the school secretary has checked your name off the list before leaving your uniform. B boys should turn in their uniforms by March 17th. Please follow the washing instructions that were sent home with the uniforms. ****************************************** SCHOOL YEARBOOK ORDERS (K-8): All who wish to purchase a school yearbook must do so by March 19th (the order is sent in on that date). Fill out the form below and return to the school office with payment of $12 per yearbook. The school yearbook does not include pictures of students in our Pre-Kindergarten. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be scheduled after school and evening on March 31st and the morning of April 1st. Each conference is scheduled for a 15 minute time period. (Additional conference times will be scheduled by the Pre-Kindergarten teachers for those that do not have children in grades K-8). Please return the conference slip below by Friday. **************************************** PRICES FOR LUNCHES AND MILK: Regular Priced Lunch is $2.50 per day in grades K-8. Milk is 30 cents for a second milk for lunch (one comes with meals) in K-8 and for milk for breaks in grades 1-8. Milk for breaks for Kindergarten is 20 cents. ***************************************** *Remember: Listen to KSUM (AM) or KFMC (FM) radio stations for weather related school delays or closings. Do not call the radio station for this information- it ties up their lines and their staff. If the Fairmont Public School closes, we will also. The same applies to late starts. If there is a late start, our morning Pre-K sessions will be canceled. You can receive school closing information on the webpages- www.ksum.com or www.keyc.com. You can also find this information on TV channel KEYC (information scrolls along the bottom of the screen if there are any closings or late starts.) ****************************************** The KIDS Saving Stamp Program: Students in K-3 can purchase savings stamps during their library time on Tuesday and students in 4-8 can purchase savings stamps during their library time on Thursday. The KIDS Saving Stamp Program is a unique method of saving money and also furthering the Lord's work. Students can purchase either 25 cent stamps or $1.00 stamps. When their Savings Book is filled they will have $25 which is used to open an interest-earning account in the child's name. Additional savings are added as additional books of stamps are filled. The money belongs to the savers- whenever they need it. We thank Mrs. Janice Goebel for her volunteer work overseeing this program.! ******************************************************* Church & Sunday School Attendance Form (K-8): Just a reminder to keep information up-to-date on the form. The form for the 3rd Quarter is to be returned to school on March 25th. Thanks! ************************************************* School assemblies here at our school on March 17 provided free by the Science Museum of Minnesota. Wonders of Science: Dinosaurs (K-2)Fossils teach us about Dinosaurs. This program uses dinosaur props and large colorful visuals to engage students in the fun of science learning. Volunteers will help the presenter discover and reconstruct a life-size dinosaur skeleton puzzle! For K-2 only Solids, Liquids, and Gases (Gr. 3-8)Imagine a test tube as large as your students, into which a volunteer adds a solid to a liquid. What happens when a balloon is fitted over the top? Introduce your students to the science of chemistry through the use of some unusual demonstrations. ***************************************** |
